On Thursday, five corporate volunteers were helping out at Leger des Heils for half a day to prepare 1.500 delicious Roti meals for and together with vulnerable Amsterdammers.
Volunteer Danilo teamed up with Mery*, who is following a job training as an entry-level chef at Leger des Heils after being homeless for years. While accurately portioning the food, there was also enough time to connect.
Danilo is impressed by Mery’s personal story: “Volunteering shows you a different reality: I usually would start off my day with a nice breakfast. For Mery and her little daughter, even a simple slice of bread has not been a daily given in the past. And today, she is standing here teaching me how to properly work in a professional kitchen so that we can help fighting food poverty in Amsterdam together.”
